What is cold-pressed dog food?
Cold-pressing is a way of producing dog food at much lower temperatures than traditional methods. However, all other cold-pressed dog foods use their main meat source as meat meal, which you may also see listed as "dried ground meat/chicken/duck etc." Meat meal is made by heating animal proteins to extremely high temperatures, often 140°C or more, and in some cases much higher, destroying a lot of the natural nutrition. So whilst the process of producing cold-pressed dog food is carried out at low temperatures, the ingredients that go into the cold-press is different. Tribal TLC is different, we don't use meat meal, and we guarantee that at least 98% of all of our ingredients have not been processed above 95°C. Find out more about the TLC process here.
What's wrong with meat meal?
We don't see the point in cold-pressing meat meal as the meat has already been pre-cooked to extremely high temperatures before they go into the cold-press. The high temperatures used to produce the meat meal destroy much of the nutrition within the meat and reduces the digestibility of the proteins. It's difficult to know the quality of the protein used as meat meal can include feathers, hooves, beaks, wool, hides and tails in unknown quantities. Meat meal also routinely has artificial preservatives added to it before it reaches the pet food manufacturer. Therefore even if the pet food says "no added artificial preservatives" the preservatives may have already been added to the ingredient. The long-term health implications of chemical preservatives are still unknown.
Why is Tribal TLC processed below 95°C?
EU regulation requires that the meat within pet foods are processed to a minimum of 90°C. Most pet food manufacturers process well above this temperature. We choose to process our pet food to the lowest temperatures possible to lock in as much nutrition as possible whilst still meeting this regulatory requirement.
What is the meat content of your food?
We use a mixed animal protein source to give your dog a variety of high quality protein, similar to a dog's natural diet. Our grain-free adult turkey recipe contains 52.4% mixed animal protein made up from 35% fresh turkey, 9.4% fish hydrolysate and 8% whole egg. On a 'fresh matter' basis this would be equivalent to 80% fresh meat.

How do I switch my dog over to Tribal TLC?
Introduce gradually over a period of five days, from day six feed 100% Tribal TLC. If your dog has a sensitive tummy or has digestive issues we would suggest estending the transition period to 10-14 days. Due to the difference in the way the foods are broken down, we do not recommend mixing TLC with normal kibble. We advise to first use the food as a treat for the first one to five days, next switch your dog's breakfast meal over and feed Tribal TLC for breakfast for another three to five days with their old food as their evening meal, and then move 100% over to Tribal TLC. You can download our simple transition guide here. Tribal TLC is suitable for feeding alongside wet and raw food.
Why is my dog drinking less/more water since switching to Tribal TLC?
If your dog was previously fed a dry kibble, you may notice that they drink less water when being fed Tribal TLC. This is perfectly normal and is because the food does not swell and absorb liquid like traditional dry kibbles, therefore meaning that your dog won't feel as thirsty.
If your dog was previously fed a wet or raw diet, you may notice that they drink more water when being fed Tribal TLC. This is perfectly normal as the Tribal TLC contains lower levels of moisture than wet or raw food. If your dog was previously fed a dry kibble and you have noticed that they are drinking more water when fed Tribal TLC you may be overfeeding your dog. Please ensure that you weigh out your dog's portion size as measuring by eye can result in overfeeding. If you are feeding the correct portion size try reducing the amount you are feeding by 5-10%. Every dog is different and you may need to adjust the exact amount you feed based on your dog and their lifestyle.
Why is my dog going to the toilet less/more since switching to Tribal TLC?
Because our food is highly digestible, many of our customers find that their dogs output is smaller and less whiffy after switching to Tribal TLC - a result we can all appreciate! If you find that your dog is going to the toilet more than normal after switching to TLC, or their stools are larger in volume you may be overfeeding your dog. Please ensure that you weigh out your dog's portion size as measuring by eye can result in overfeeding. If you are feeding the correct portion size try reducing the amount you are feeding by 5-10%.
